SAPIT VILLAGE

Situated high in the hills, at 1400m on the southern slopes of Gunung Pusuk, the small mountain village of SAPIT is a quiet retreat with wonderful views. It is accessible from Sembalun Lawang (2-3hr by daily bus) on the northern side of Gunung Pusuk or from the cross-island road, either via AIK MEL or PRINGGABAYA - it's a fifteen-kilometre drive from either, although there is more public transport from Pringgabaya.

In Sapit, there is accommodation at Hati Suci ($10-15) and the simpler Balelangga (tel 0370/636545; $5-10), run by the same people. Staff here will point you in the right direction for walks to the nearby waterfalls, monkey forest, canyon and hot springs. They also arrange all-inclusive trekking trips to Gunung Rinjani.
